Revisiting My First Blog Post

A better recreation of an iconic Audrey Hepburn photo.

I wish I could announce that it was some kind of of anniversary or milestone for my blog, but it's not. After watching the recent Audrey Hepburn documentary and improving on my makeup skills, I just thought it was time to give these Audrey inspired makeup looks another try! I grabbed Audrey Style by Pamela Clarke Keogh and flipped to the "That Funny Face" section to give these looks another go.

Seriously, the best book ever.

How cute are these tutorials?

Before I get back into the makeup, I would like to remind you that while I said my skills have improved, I am still no beauty guru. at least now I can create better winged eyeliner, can apply a perfect red lip, and have more knowledge of what products work best for my skin.

When I wrote this, I lived by a basic rule that foundation and concealer must always come first, but since watching more makeup tutorials I've realized that I can be more beneficial to do this after your eyes. So, unlike last time, I did not start any of these looks by setting my face first. In fact, I made sure to wash my face and put on primer before, so I would be ready to go!

Country Morning

Contrary to what these photos suggest, I have learned how to pose for a photo since my first blog post.

As I mentioned in my original post, the book notes this look was inspired by Audrey's love for her serene life in the country. Makeup artist DARAC gives us some tips to master that elegant, natural look that Audrey could wear effortlessly;

  • Starting with the eyes, I chose to use my Pretty Basic Eye Shadow Palette to create this natural eye look. For the lid the book suggests a neutral beige, so I used the shade Daisy, a light neutral, and swept it from lid to brow

  • For the liner, DARAC suggests a small amount of darker shadow applied closely to the lash line, so I used the shade Ring Ring, a dark brown tone, to create that look.

  • This look suggests brown mascara. However, just like the first time, I don't own any, so I used Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara.

  • For the brows, DARAC says to simply brush them up and out using a small toothbrush dusted with a bit of hairspray. I decided since my brows are blonde this would not work as well for me as Audrey. I filled them in slightly using Maybelline TotalTemptation Brow Definer in Blonde. Then, I brushed them up and out like the books suggests.

  • Then I applied my foundation, BareMinerals BarePro Liquid Foundation in Fair 01, and my concealer, Elf Camo Concealer in Fair Rose under my eyes and to hide any blemishes.

  • For the cheeks, the book says that the blush should be very transparent, so I did a light layer of Secret Santa from the Too Faced Flamingo Palette.

  • I finished off my Country Morning look with my lips, which I applied using my finger like it suggests. I used Pink In The Afternoon by Revlon (a.k.a the shade Audrey made famous in Breakfast at Tiffany's).

I loved this look more this time around because I enjoyed the simplicity of it. I felt elegant and most importantly my natural features really could shine through.

Fair Lady

The duck face is back.

Clarke Keogh's book suggests that "Fair Lady" was an elevated natural look that Hepburn would wear at public events. The look is supposed to "put your best face forward", so I could not wait to give it another go. Starting with the eyes once again;

  • I chose to use the same natural Pretty Basic Palette. I started by using the same Daisy shade from before and applying it from lid to brow.

  • Then I used Ring Ring again to line my eyes, as DARAC suggests using a brown liner.

  • From there DARAC tells us to use a smokier gray shadow to smudge over the brown liner. I used Content Baby Content, a metallic gray shade, to do so. I even added a wing for a bit more drama. Then I used this shade to line my lower lash line as well.

  • I finished the eyes by applying Damn Girl Mascara by Too Faced as this look calls for black mascara.

  • Next, I applied my foundation and concealer.

  • I used my same blush from before to give my skin a sun kissed look like the book tells us to do. This meant applying it on my cheekbones, bridge of my nose, my chin, and over my brows.

  • For the lip DARAC suggests a coral or rose tone and notes that the lips should be creamy, so I used Sephora Loves NY Cream Lipstick, a satin coral tone.

I have to say, I pulled this look off much better than the first time around. I felt much more polished and like I was truly putting my best face forward.

Sabrina

This pose has been a staple in my blog since day one.

This makeup look channels the young, empowered ingenuine that Audrey Hepburn was. This look it youthful and spirited, and I could not wait to recreate it!

  • Getting to play around with a bit more color, I started by breaking out my It's a Princess Thing Eye Shadow Palette by Colourpop. I started, just like the book says by applying a medium plum shade, Poison Apple, to my crease.

  • Then, I applied Juju, a pink shade to my lid. DARAC really suggests a more violet toned beige, but I didn't have it so this pink shade I thought would do the trick.

  • Next, I smudge the black shade, Midnight Curfew, to my lash line. The book really says to use a charcoal line, but, once again, I don't have that, so I decided shadow would do the trick.

  • I then applied Damn Girl Mascara to create a dramatic lash look.

  • Then, I applied my foundation and concealer as needed.

  • For the cheeks, I had a bit more fun with the blush and made it more noticeable than the first two looks by adding more layers. Here the book noted to make the pink pop!

  • Lastly, the book asks to line and color the lips with a plum or a mocha color. I first, lined them with my Dreamhouse Lip Liner from Colourpop's Malibu Barbie Collection. Then I filled them in with Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink in Lover, a more plum toned neutral lip color.

  • I finished off this look with a bit of gloss to channel the youthful energy of Sabrina. Plus I've learned matte lipstick is not as flattering as a bit of shine.

This look truly made me feel like I was a kid playing around with makeup for the first time all over again. The colors were fun and youthful and made me feel like a young star ready to conquer the world.

Moon River

TBH this pose looked better the first time.

Once again, I have saved the best for last! While Audrey was known for her elegance, her most famous character, Holly Golightly, was known for her glamour. According to Clarke, this look is the best for an evening out. To master this all out glam look DARAC suggests;

  • Applying first a medium beige shade from lid to brow. Because I'm quite pale I used a lighter beige shade, Soloist from the Maybelline Nudes of New York Eye Shadow Palette.

  • Then I made the decision to go over my lid with the shade Originator, a sparkly champagne color, just to add a hint of sparkle.

  • After it suggests to line your lash line to crease with a charcoal shadow, which I did not have. So, I used the deep brown shade, Self-Starter.

  • From there the makeup artist says to go over the liner with a liquid liner and to add a wing for a more dramatic effect. To do this I used Diorshow On Stage Liner in Vinyl Black. DARAC mentions here that layering is great because you can be less precise which when it comes to winged liner I love.

  • Then DARAC suggests to add false lashes for that "Golightly Glow" which you definitely don't have to tell me to do twice. I used Lily Lashes Lite Faux Mink in Diamonds.

  • Next, I applied my foundation and concealer.

  • The next step for this look is the contour, so using my Pretty Basic Palette I contoured under my cheekbones using the shade, Basic. Because I'm so pale I kept this light and did not do a full contour as suggested.

  • From there I very lightly applied my blush to the apples of my cheeks.

  • Though DARAC doesn't suggest it. I felt like his look needed a bit more sparkle, so I highlighted my cheekbones, my nose, my chin, and over my brow bone using Pretty, the highlighter from the Pretty Basic Palette.

  • Then in full-glam fashion, I went with a bold red lip and used Rouge Dior 999.

This look was my absolute favorite because it was the most #extra. Truly, I will never grow tired of channeling my inner Holly Golightly with dramatic lashes and a bold red lip!

I have to say, I was much more impressed with these makeup looks this time around. Other than the fact that I'm a bit better at makeup, I felt like this time I was truly putting my own spin on things. Last time, I followed the advice of the Clarke Keogh's book as best as I could. This time, I wasn't afraid to change things up, and let my own personality shine through. Of course this was all while staying true to what Audrey Hepburn would do.

XOXO,

Kristin
