Mermaid Hair, Don't Care

So ready to channel my inner mermaid.

Before I was obsessed with Cinderella, I was obsessed with Ariel. I mean, what three-year-old doesn't want to be a mermaid? The seashell bra and the green tail were absolute goals! This is why she was at the top of my list for Disney Princesses whose fashion I wanted to reimagine. This also meant the Florida girl and city girl parts of my personality could come together to make amazing, mermaid approved looks.

Ariel's Beauty Look

I say I nailed the mermaid hair for sure!

I had a couple goals in mind when creating my hair and makeup looks for this post. First, I wanted my skin to look dewy and glow because we all know a mermaid's skin would be perfectly moisturized. Second, I wanted to create the perfect, wavy mermaid hair because we also all know that Ariel has the best hair of all the princesses. I started with the makeup;

  • If you've been keeping up with my posts, you know I started with the lashes. This time I used Tartiest Pro in Girl Boss.

  • From there, of course, I filled in my brows.

  • Then, using It's a Princess Thing Eyeshadow Palette I applied Ray, a shimmering champagne shade, across my entire lid.

  • After that, I applied my foundation and concealer.

  • Then I applied highlighter almost everywhere, but specifically on my cheekbones, chin, nose, and above the brows.

  • I then applied both a red lipstick and a red gloss mostly because I needed to channel Ariel's iconic red hair somehow.

  • I finished my look by spraying a dewy setting spray for another layer of added shimmer.

After getting my mermaid glow, I knew it was time for my mermaid hair. I gave myself a side part because that's what Ariel rocks in the movie. Then I curled my hair with a wand to give it perfect beachy waves.

The Accessories

I was excited to add a few beachy accessories to this look. That included;

  • A gold seashell clutch

  • Rhinestoned espadrilles

  • A seashell necklace. You know, like the one that holds her voice. I know Ursula wears it in the movie, but I imagine Ariel wearing it and keeping her control in 2021.

Taking a Swim with Flounder

Y'all knew this look was coming!

So, yes, I went with the obvious choice with my first outfit which was a swimsuit. I mean she is a mermaid! Plus, her purple seashell bra is iconic. I went with a purple bikini with a crisscross cutout on top, and a green wrap coverup to match her green tail. I could totally see Ariel rocking this look on her beach day!

Turning her Mermaid Tail into a Trendy 'Fit

We all know Ariel would be he one setting trends in 2021.

Ariel's green tail and purple seashell bra were absolute goals growing up, so I wanted to embody that in a chic yet trendy way. At this point, we all know how much I love the scarf top trend, so using just that and a necklace, I made the top. I paired this with some sleek, high-waisted, green slacks. This outfit took her classic color scheme and made it something any trendy city girl would love to wear.

Going on a Dinner Date with Eric

Cause apparently showing up in a ballgown would be #extra.

After Ariel washes up on shore and is found by Prince Eric, she is cleaned up and put in an amazing pink ballgown. She then proceeds to have dinner with the prince and staff. Now, in 2021, a ballgown might be a little much for a first dinner date (I mean I maybe would, but that's expected), so I wanted to reimagine that outfit a bit more casual. I chose to wear my favorite flirty, pink off-the-shoulder corset to channel the dress, but paired it with distressed, straight-leg jeans for a more casual feel. Either way, we know she would have won Eric's heart!

When Triton Finally Gives Her Legs

I would love to take a dramatic walk out of the ocean in this dress!

The best outfit from the entire movie is the sparkling gown Ariel wears when Triton finally gives her legs for real. Of course, I had to channel this look, but staying true to mixing both beach and city vibes, I gave it a slight boho spin. This sequin mini dress from Free People has an added sheer layer at the bottom and a strappy back that seems like something Ariel would wear on a night out to celebrate her new life.

I have to say, out of all the princesses I've done so far, this one felt the most like playing dress-up. While I stayed true to my own style, I added many boho elements that I normally wouldn't wear. Just like when Ariel became a human, it pushed me out of my comfort zone. But in both fashion and life, I think that's when the true magic happens.

XOXO.
