I Give DIY Skincare a Shot

Even the Cover of this book is beautiful!

"So many of you guys have been asking about my skincare routine." Okay, definitely not, but one of my resolutions for 2021 is to take better care of my skin. So far, it's going well and it's thanks to Eat Beautiful (my skincare bible). In this amazing book, Wendy Rowe, celebrity makeup artist and skincare expert, teaches us how to make our skin glow from the inside out. The book is full of food and recipes that help us take care an even improve the quality of our skin. She gives out general skincare and nutrition advice before she talks about different skin care concerns for each season and what foods help.

Big surprise, the secret to amazing skin is what we have been told all along, eat healthy. Seriously, it's basically what nutritionists have been telling us all along; stay hydrated, eat lots of colorful veggies, and junk food is the enemy. Rowe, however, does break down the benefits of specific foods, so if you have a a skincare concern you'd like to address, you can see exactly what foods work best for that.

One of my favorite aspects of the book is that Rowe also gives us DIY skincare recipes, and they're surprisingly simple! There's seriously enough in there to have your own DIY spa day. While at the moment, I don't have the time for all of that, I decided to give her face mask recipe a try.

As you can see here, it only takes three ingredients to make this face mask. The first being spirulina powder, a type of algae that is rich in antioxidants. Using this powder in a face mask can help your skin to stay healthy. Its anti-inflammatory properties can even help treat acne. It also can give you the youthful glow we all crave. (Warning, it does have a fishy smell.). Though it was optional, I added coconut oil to the mask, I did this mostly to give it a more clay like consistency, but coconut oil is said to be great for the skin because it is also packed with antioxidants. The final ingredient is mineral water. While it may not seem different from simple H2O, the added minerals can help your skin stay more hydrated. Basically, this mask seems like a miracle treatment, and I could not wait to try it!

Did I match my sweatshirt to the mask on purpose?

As the directions said, I mixed the ingredients, and applied it to my skin with a foundation brush. It said to leave it on for five to ten minutes, so I decided to keep it on for seven just to be somewhere in the middle. Now, I've only used this mask one time, so I can't praise it for any long-term effects on my skin just yet. I will say though, that after removing my skin felt clean and hydrated. As someone with extremely sensitive skin, I was worried about potentially breaking out, but am happy to report that this mask didn't cause one. I definitely will give this mask another try (bad smell and all) because I am hopeful that with this treatment and following the nutrition advice in Eat Beautiful, I will have my most beautiful, glowing skin yet!

XOXO,

Kristin
