Book Club: The Heiresses

Updated: Jan 11, 2021

Glamour, Gossip, and Mystery! Oh My!

When it comes to entertainment, I love guilty pleasures. I love to binge-watch almost every dating show and over-dramatic teen dramas. Recently, I found myself wanting to re-watch Gossip Girl for about the hundredth time, but did not want to go through the emotional heartbreak of watching Serena van der Woodsen and Nate Archibald break up again. My solution to this dilemma, reading The Heiresses by Sara Shepard.

This glamourous and thrilling page-turner follows Rowan, Corinne, and Aster, heiresses to the Saybrook jewelry fortune, after their cousin Poppy is found dead outside Saybrook offices. While the death is first thought to be a suicide, the authorities find a reason to believe otherwise. Shortly after, the girls receive a threat saying, "one heiress down, four to go." As expected, many scandalous secrets are soon revealed, and our heiresses find themselves in dangerous situations. Shepard truly leaves you guessing from beginning to end as I could have never guessed the final outcome.

I love this book because it is one that allows you to escape from everyday life. In current times, I felt like what I needed was just that. Which is why I read it for a second time. Though the characters are rich socialites, I feel like everyone could relate to at least one. Rowan is a workaholic tomboy who wants to find love, Aster is a free-spirited party girl with a desire to rebel, and Corinne is a perfectionist who struggles to choose between her image and what her heart wants. With so many twists and turns it feels like a whole season of Gossip Girl is playing out in one book, but in a darker and more thrilling way. Even the second time around, I could not put it down!

An #Extra Breakdown

Perfect for: Lovers of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and the gossip found on Page Six

Favorite Character: Corinne. Even though all three girls are relatable, I high-key related to her crippling perfectionism, and nearly cried when she finally let that go.

Where To Read: At home curled up in your most expensive blanket

Escape To: Manhattan's scandalous and luxurious Upper East Side

Best Wine to Read With: La Marca Prosecco to feel just as glamourous as the New York socialites featured in this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a guilty pleasure read, and would love to know what moment you found the most shocking! Comment below!

XOXO,

Kristin
