"A Girl Can't Read That Sort of Thing Without her Lipstick"

My attempt at recreating an Audrey Hepburn photo

On National Lipstick Day, there are countless sales and promotions for lipstick, but I had a small problem. I was broke. That wasn't going to stop me from celebrating one of the best days of the year, so I decided to have a celebration of my own.

Recently, I made an impulse purchase of the book Audrey Style by Pamela Clarke Keogh. The book is filled with information of how Audrey Hepburn became a true style icon, and countless tips to help you embrace the personal style of Queen Audrey herself. One of my favorite sections, "That Funny Face", gives four make-up tutorials from celebrity make-up artist DARAC to capture Audrey's classic make-up looks in everyday life. With no money and no plans for the evening, I had found my way to celebrate National Lipstick Day.

Make-Up Tips from "Audrey Style" by Pamela Clarke Keogh

Before, I get into to the tutorials, I have a disclaimer. I do not try too many make-up tutorials, and I am far from a beauty guru when it comes to my make-up skills. I can apply decent daily looks, and can do mean stage make-up from all my years of dance competitions, but I am no pro.

Before starting the tutorials, I put on base make-up. I started by spraying my face with primer. I use Too Faced Hangover 3-In-1 Replenishing Primer and Setting Spray because having a primer that is also a setting spray is perfect for a broke girl like me. After that, I followed up with foundation. I have very sensitive skin, so I use BareMinerals Original Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 15 in Fair. As all the beauty gurus advise, I apply the powder foundation with a brush in a circular motion on my entire face. The last step in base routine is concealer which I apply to my under-eye bags and any blemishes. For concealer, I use NYX Professional Makeup Hi Definition Photo Concealer Wand in Porcelain. Now that My face was primed and ready, I could begin.

Country Morning

My attempt at the County Morning look (sorry I can't take a normal photo)

I started with Country Morning because it was the most natural-looking and easiest of the four looks. According to Keogh, Audrey loved her serene life in the country, and this look mimics that feeling.

As the book says, I started with the lips. It asks for a sheer, natural color applied with the fingertips. I used BareMinerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lipcolor in Juju because it was the closest color I had to the natural color of my lips. I noticed that applying the color with my fingers as opposed to the applicator created a much softer, more natural looking lip.

I moved on to the checks next. DURAC suggests a transparent blush look, so I very lightly applied Too Faced Sweetheart Perfect Flush Blush in Candy Glow on the apple of the check and blended back. It was enough to give me a hint of color, but overall a still natural looking face.

The last step, but definitely the most complicated was the eyes. I started by sweeping Strip Poker from the Too Faced Natural Eyes Neutral Eye Shadow Palette because the look asked for a neutral beige or brown tone. DURAC suggests using a darker shadow as eyeliner, so I brushed Sexpresso from the same eye shadow palette as close to lashes as possible. This look called for a brown mascara, but I did not have any, so I used BareMinerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara, and put on less coats then I typically would. The last step asked for the brows to be brushed with an old toothbrush, sprayed with a little bit of hairspray, but that seemed like too much considering I was going to wipe off this look in the next few seconds. I decided to brush them up and out using my eyebrow brush. With the eyes complete, I had a simple look that as Keogh suggested I could wear at "any time of the year".

Fair Lady

My attempt at the Fair Lady look

This next look was Hepburn's staple look at public events. One which, according to the book, would help to "put your best face forward".

The Lips called for a soft, moist look, so I was sure to apply lip balm before beginning. It asked for a coral or rose color, so I applied my favorite and almost daily go-to lipstick, Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Dusty Rose.

This look is a very sun-kissed look and asked a hint of blush wherever the sun would naturally hit your skin including the bridge of the nose, over the brow bone, and on the chin. I used the same blush as I did for the Country Morning look. When I applied it to the checks, I applied it on the apple and back in a circular motion just as DURAC suggested.

I started the eyes by using the same neutral beige, Strip Poker, from the Country Lady look. Then I used, a brown pencil, Wet n Wild Kohl Eyeliner in Simma Brown Now, as asked for by the book. The next step was to blend a darker brown shadow over the liner to create a smoky look. I used the same Sexpresso shade from before. I also used this shade on the outer edge of my lower lid. To finish off the look I applied Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara, but kept the coats lighter. DURAC suggests finishing the look with a soft pink finishing powder, but I didn't have that, so I just left it the way it was. I enjoyed this look because of the use of pink tones. It's still a simple look, but with fun pink twists.

Sabrina

My attempt at the Sabrina look

Sabrina is a look created to embody youthful, polished ingenue Audrey portrayed in the movie.

The lips call for a glossy plum or mocha color. I used the same Juju liquid lipstick from before, but added BareMinerals Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss in Rebel for a hint of shine. Normally, I am not a huge fan of gloss because its sticky, and can look greasy, but in this case it just added a playfulness to my look.

The checks are supposed to look clean, but playful. It asked to sweep the blush across the cheekbone, but to use a pink shade. I used Pink Poinsettia from the appropriately titled Too Faced I Believe in Pink Makeup Palette. Since the palette was named after an iconic Hepburn quote, I knew she would approve of the look. With cute pink checks, I felt like I was embodying the fun-loving nature of Sabrina's personality.

It became obvious that I am not a makeup artist when it came to the eyes. I had trouble blending the shadow because of lotion I had used to help remove makeup between looks. Even with my frustration, I believe I eventually pulled the look together. I started by attempting to blend Wish for It from Too Faced I Believe in Pink Makeup Palette for a nice, darker plum shade. For the lid, DURAC suggests using a lighter violet shade. I used Lavender Cake from the Too Faced White Chocolate Bar. I also swept this color under my brows. Of course, since I'm #extra, I added my own twist. I thought a youthful look like this one could use a hint of shimmer so I added Sugared Raisin from the White Chocolate Bar to my lid. The next step was eyeliner, and the book said to use a Q-tip to apply a charcoal liner to the eye. I did not have a charcoal liner, so I used the Black Sugar eye shadow from the White Chocolate Bar. Then I filled in my brows using the NYX Professional Makeup 3-in-1 Brow Pencil in Blonde. I used he powder portion because I was out of the pencil and the gel was too dark for my eyebrows. For more drama, I could have applied fake eyelashes, but I didn't have any, so I just used my Better Than Sex Mascara. Even though I got pretty frustrated halfway through, I thought this look was cute, but a little too youthful for my everyday life.

Moon River

My attempt at the Moon River look (seriously, why can't I take a normal photo?)

I saved this look for last, because I felt like it would be the best. This look is a dramatic look for every Holly Golightly wannabe (myself included). It's perfect for a glamourous night out, whether it be with your squad or your own Paul Varjak.

Another reason why I was excited for the look is because I love a classic red lip. The book describes the lips for this look as "full and sensuous." I used my favorite blue-red shade, Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Sarafine. Already, the look was classic, but dramatic, and I could not wait to finish it.

DURAC advises to use a neutral color to contour. I'll admit, I have not really tried to contour my face because it confuses me, but I decided to give it my best try. I used Warm My Heart from the Too Faced Natural Beauty Palette, brushing it under my cheek bones, up into my hairline, and right under my chin. I kept it light just in case I was doing it wrong. I then added my Candy Glow blush from my apple of my check to my ear. I did not look like I had been bruised all over my face, so I decided it was a success.

The eyes for this look are smoky and glamourous. I started by sweeping that same Strip Poker shade from some of the other looks across my entire lid from lashes to brows. Then the book says to add a smoky grey shadow on the lid. I used Guilt-Free from the Too Faced White Chocolate Bar. It was a lighter grey, so it was not as smoky as I had hoped, but still added a touch of drama. I lined the eyes with the Black Sugar Shadow I used in the Sabrina look, but then added liquid liner on top like DURAC suggests. I added a slight wing for "extra drama". I carefully smudged a little more of Black Sugar to add to the smoky look. The look calls from false lashes to finish it off, but since I did not have any, I heavily applied my Better Than Sex Mascara. Overall, this look was my favorite, and I felt like I was channeling my inner Holly Golightly.

Of course, I would have loved to spend National Lipstick Day fighting the crowds at Mac for free lipstick or stocking up on the sale lipsticks from Ulta, but found a fun, free way to celebrate a great holiday. Keogh ends her book with one of my favorite Audrey Hepburn quotes that I applied to my day and everyday after. " The most important thing is to enjoy your life -- to be happy -- it's all that matters."

XOXO,

Kristin
